Governor Patrick rejects interior design regulation

hurrayBoston, MA. IDPC has just received word from a lobbyist who has been working to help resist interior design regulation that HB 4731, An Act to Recognize the Profession of Interior Designers to Bid on State Contracts has been VETOED by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.
While this bill may have appeared to be a benign vehicle enabling interior designers to bid on state contracts, it was really just an attempt to get a “foot in the door” to pave the way to introduce more restrictive regulation.
We applaud Governor Patrick, who now joins the governors of Indiana, New York and Colorado, as well as legislators and even with judges throughout our country who have considered and REJECTED the concept of interior design regulation as it serves no public good, and recognize that it would instead create a monopoly that would benefit only a small handful of industry insiders.
Thank you to all in the design community for your phone calls and letters to the Governor — they worked!
However, we will continue to keep a close eye on two other Massachusetts interior design bills: HB 341 (Title Act) and SB 178 (Practice Act) for any attempts to re-activate them.
Best regards,
Executive Director
